What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is a nervous condition. It occurs as a result of damage to your peripheral nerves. Peripheral nerves connect our central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, to the rest of the body.

Injury, trauma, and various conditions can cause damage to your peripheral nerve. Examples of such conditions include diabetes, cancer, infectious diseases, side effects of medication, vitamin B6 and B12 deficiency, and motor neuron diseases such as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Damaged peripheral nerves cause pain, weakness, burning, tingling, twitching, or inability to sense pain.

There are various types of peripheral neuropathy conditions. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, there are over 100 types of peripheral neuropathy. Examples include headache, chronic migraines, occipital neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy, cubital tunnel syndrome, peripheral nerve tumors, chronic pain after a traumatic experience or surgery, diabetes illness and more.

Treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy

Various treatments help to manage the symptoms and condition. They include:

  • Medications: like anti-seizure medications, pain relievers, antidepressants, and topical treatments. Though these medications may help to mask the symptoms, the cause of this disease is not being treated, only managed.

  • Therapies: like physical therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), red light therapy, chiropractic adjustments, extremity adjustments & more. To learn more CLICK HERE
